The Education Act 2005 abolished the annual governors' meeting for parents and the governors' annual report to parents, and substituted a requirement to publish a school profile once each academic year.

What is... a School Profile?

A School Profile is a new form of annual report for schools.

School Profiles will complement the information available in school performance tables by offering parents and others a deeper and broader picture of a school and its achievements. The proposal for School Profiles forms part of the Government's 'new relationship' with schools, and aims to support the focus on personalised learning. The new relationship aims to provide a new way of working between Government and schools that offers greater support to schools.

What does it include?

The Profile aims to capture key information about a school in an accessible format. The intention is that statistical parts of the School Profile would be compiled centrally by the Department for Education and Skills and would also contain some information from Ofsted.

Schools would write other elements of the Profile, providing details about the context of the school, its broader achievements and extra-curricular activities.

The Profile may replace the Governors' Annual Report to parents, and possibly some elements of the school prospectus. It should offer parents and the public a broader and more rounded view of a school and a deeper understanding of performance within the classroom and beyond.
